Braking System Repairs/Replacement

It's essential that your brakes are kept in good condition to benefit the safety of yourself and others. Poor condition of your brakes will not only effect safety, it will fail your MOT.

Regular brake checks and maintenance will help avoid them getting into poor condition, as well as avoiding the cost of expensive parts.

Brake fluid absorbs water, and water is more compressible than brake fluid. This causes your brakes to begin to feel sponge-like, leading to them becoming less effective. This can also start to corrode the braking system, ending in expensive costs to yourself. At GR Automotive, we will always check for water content before topping up the brake fluid. Brake fluid typically needs replacing every 2-3 years.

How often shall I have my brake system checked?

It can depend on the type of driving you do - motorway, urban or both, as well as your style of driving. Typically it is advised you have the system checked annually (usually during a routine service or MOT) or 10,000-12,000 miles - whichever comes first. For high-mileage drivers, it is recommended to check every 5,000-6,000 miles.

What signs of wear do I look for to my brake components?

Wear and tear on your car's brake can vary. If you can hear a noise or feel any vibrations when braking, this could be a sign that your pads are worn, or even that the discs may be damaged.

Another symptom may be your car starts to pull to one side during braking, which is a sign of braking imbalance. This could be caused by break components being corroded or starting to cease. We'd recommend having this inspected as soon as possible.
